What Amazon listing design costs.

Ask the question and the honest answer is a number between fifty dollars and fifteen thousand. That is not a market that has lost its mind. It is four different products being sold under one phrase, and once you can tell them apart the spread stops being mysterious and starts being a decision.

The whole market, one axis

Three orders of magnitude, five bands, one scale.

  1. Budget freelancer$50 to $150 an image
  2. Experienced freelancer$150 to $500 a listing
  3. Specialist agency$300 to $1,000+ a listing
  4. Set including photography$750 to $3,500 a listing
  5. Premium set, with video$3,500 to $7,000 a listing
Our full 7-image set is $365, design only, on photographs you supply. That is the bottom of the specialist agency band rather than the middle of it. We are not going to dress that up as a premium position: it is a low number for the band, and the reasons are ordinary. The studio is in Bulgaria, it has been doing this one thing since 2010, and there is no account management layer between you and the person building the images. Those are cost advantages, not a claim about taste.

Why the spread is not a spread

Those are not five prices for one thing. They are prices for four different things.

The biggest jump on that axis has nothing whatsoever to do with design quality. Establish which of these you are buying before you compare a single number.

  1. 01Design onlySomeone takes photographs you already have and builds a gallery from them. No shoot, no props, no studio. This is where the freelancer and agency bands sit, and it is what most sellers are actually shopping for, because most sellers already have supplier photography.
  2. 02Design plus photographySomeone shoots the product first, then builds the gallery. A fundamentally larger job with a fundamentally larger cost base, which is why this band starts roughly where the design-only band ends. Compare a design-only quote to a photography-inclusive one and conclude that one studio is three times dearer, and you have not found a price difference. You have found a scope difference.
  3. 03Design, photography and videoThe top band adds motion, which adds a second production entirely: a different crew, a different schedule and a different file deliverable. Nothing about it makes the still images better.
  4. 04A monthly queueNot a scope so much as a different unit. You buy capacity by the month rather than a listing by the listing, and the comparison only works once you know your own volume.
The monthly studios are not on that scale, deliberately

Subscription studios sell a queue at roughly $500 to $1,600 a month. Unlimited requests at one monthly price with a stated turnaround, worked one or two at a time. Whether that beats a per-listing price depends entirely on how many listings you have and how fast you actually feed the queue. Two listings a year through a monthly subscription is the most expensive option on this page.

Inside one scope

Five things move the price, and only one of them is the studio’s opinion of itself.

How many images

The obvious one. Amazon displays seven and accepts nine. A five-image set and a nine-image set are genuinely different amounts of work, and a studio that charges the same for both is guessing at one of them.

Whether anything has to be photographedLargest

By far the largest single factor, and the one most often left ambiguous in a quote. A shoot can cost more than the entire design job around it.

Standard A+ or Premium A+

Premium modules render differently on desktop and on phones and the crops are not the same shape, so every Premium module is laid out twice. Any quote that prices Premium the same as standard has either not read the spec or is not doing the second layout.

How many listings

A second product in the same range reuses the brief, the setup and the whole visual system, so it is genuinely cheaper to make than the first. If a studio charges you full price for the fifth SKU in a range, they are charging you to solve a problem they already solved.

How fast

Rush work displaces other work and gets priced accordingly. This one is legitimate. It should be a stated multiplier on the rate card rather than a number that appears after you mention you are in a hurry.

One of those is worth saying plainly, because it costs sellers a lot of money: a bigger budget does not fix a main image that fails in the grid. If your click-through rate is the problem, the fix is a better idea for one frame, not a more expensive production around it. The Search Grid Test shows you that frame at the size the decision is actually made at, in your browser, in about ten seconds, for nothing.

If you read one thing

Five questions that make two quotes comparable.

Ask all five of every quote you are holding and the spread usually collapses to something legible. Ours are answered on the rate card before you tell us your name: design only unless you add photography, both set sizes counted, Premium A+ carrying a $25 second-size charge per module because it is laid out twice, and 10% off a second listing in the same order.

  1. 01Does this include photography, or am I supplying the images?Settle this before anything else. It is the largest variable in listing design pricing and the most common reason two quotes look incomparable. A design-only set and a photography-inclusive set are different products, not different prices.
  2. 02How many images, and are A+ modules counted separately?A full listing means different things to different studios. Amazon displays seven gallery images and accepts nine, and the A+ modules below the fold are a separate pool of work. Get a count of both before you compare two numbers.
  3. 03Is Premium A+ priced differently from standard A+?It should be. Premium modules need separate desktop and phone artwork, which is a second layout per module rather than a crop. If a studio quotes Premium at the standard rate, ask whether the mobile layout is being done at all.
  4. 04What does a second listing cost? The answer tells you whether a studio prices by effort or by what they think you will pay. A second SKU in the same range reuses the brief and the visual system, so it should cost measurably less than the first.
  5. 05What is the revision policy, in writing? Two rounds and unlimited inside scope are very different products at the same headline price, and you find out which one you bought at the worst possible moment. Get it in writing before you pay a deposit.
Band by band

What the money actually buys, including where it stops buying anything.

Budget freelancer$50–$150 an image

Template execution. Your product is dropped into a layout that has been used a thousand times, with a badge, a burst and three icons. It will be compliant, it will be fast, and it will look like everything around it in the search row, which is the specific way it fails.

Experienced freelancer$150–$500 a listing

Somebody's judgement about your particular product: what the buyer is worried about, what to answer first, what to leave out. That judgement is the whole product, and it is why this band is wide. Two freelancers at the same price can be delivering very different amounts of it.

Specialist agency$300–$1,000+ a listing

The same judgement, with a studio behind it: a process, a schedule, cover when one person is ill, and usually a written revision policy. Where it stops being worth the premium is when the extra money buys an account manager rather than a better set of images.

Set including photography$750–$3,500 a listing

A shoot, then a gallery built from it. Studio, photographer, lighting, props, a model if the frame needs one, and shipping your product to wherever the shoot happens. Published packages tend to run seven to ten images at the bottom of this band and twelve or more at the top.

Premium set, with video$3,500–$7,000 a listing

Everything above plus a second production. Motion, sound, sometimes shopper testing. Real work, legitimately expensive, and mostly irrelevant if your actual problem is that nobody can tell what the product is at thumbnail size.
